Developer: I need money and direction, so you should hire me and mentor me.

Me: Okay, please study the plans for this tool we’re building and let me know what you think.

Me (30 days later): You there?

Developer: I was busy, but I can assure you I’m super responsive and get things done.

Me: Okay, please study the plans for this tool we’re building and let me know what you think.

Me (30 days later): You there?

Developer: Do you expect me to absorb 100% of the development costs?

Me: No, but you’d have to demonstrate you’re competent and serious. And if I were you, I’d take a moment to study any project opportunity, especially if I am the one reaching out for help.

/// This happened just this afternoon.

I believe that everyone deserves a chance.

Since we all need the opportunity (not privilege) to show we can get stuff done and earn some experience.

So when someone opens a door for you at your request– take immediate action and jump through it.

Don’t wait 60 days and then ask how much you’re going to get paid, before you even look at what they want or have demonstrated you’re capable.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

This way you’re able to give many people a chance, hiring only the ones who have earned it.
