In early 2018, a sophomore defensive back at tiny Saint Vincent College volunteered to drive a guest speaker from the airport to campus. The speaker was me. Tanner Laycock had reached out before the pickup, and during that drive we talked about everything he wanted to build. Within days he had flown to a workshop. A few days after that, he dropped out of college to join BlitzMetrics. I want to honor Tanner.
The Bet That Paid Off
Leaving school was an abrupt decision, and not everyone understood it. Tanner did it for one reason: mentorship, and the chance to skip years of failure by doing the work next to people who had already done it. He became one of the hardest-working young people I have ever had on a team, and he helped shape the Content Factory process and the Topic Wheel we still teach today. We told that story together on the 200th episode of the Hustle & Flowchart podcast.
Why I Honor Tanner
Real marketing is not what you say about yourself. It is what other people say about you. Tanner learned that early, building authority by surrounding himself with people of authority and boosting it a dollar a day. Today he is putting that same craft to work in his own business, selling premium golf carts under the GolfTanner brand. The product changed. The method did not.
Thank You, Tanner
I am not being paid to say any of this. Tanner spent years in my home and on the road with me, and watching him bet on himself was a privilege. Thank you for the airport ride that started it all. Follow him at tannerlaycock.com.
