Summary. Elusive Profit, launched in January 2023 by Joseph Popelas while he was a college junior, sells ebooks and templates bundled with Discord access on Whop. Whop’s headline puts it at $15,000 within two months after he left Shopify and WooCommerce, which were costing him hundreds of dollars a month. If you sell a digital file plus a community, the cost comparison is the part to read.
What Elusive Profit was doing before Whop
Joseph sold through Shopify and WooCommerce. His complaint was fit and cost: the dashboards were built for physical products, and he was paying hundreds of dollars a month for them.
His words: “Shopify & Woo-commerce are not made for digital products. The dashboards were complicated, and I paid hundreds of dollars monthly”. The write-up does not state where he is based.
What changed on Whop
Elusive Profit moved to a Whop storefront. Whop delivers the files and templates after checkout and grants the Discord access in the same purchase.
That is the whole mechanism. One listing, one checkout, and the two things a buyer gets, the file and the community, arrive together without Joseph doing anything by hand.
Whop’s write-up does not state the price of the bundle, the number of buyers, or what he pays Whop beyond the standard rate. It is dated March 15, 2023, so the product screens it describes may have changed.
The numbers
Whop’s headline says $15,000 within two months. The body of the same write-up says $10,000-plus in the first two months. Both figures are in the source; it does not reconcile them, and I am reporting both.
The before-side number is the one I would weigh: hundreds of dollars a month in platform fees for a product that needs no shipping. The write-up does not state the exact amount.
What I would tell a community owner to copy
Price the plumbing before the product. A fixed monthly fee on a store that does $2,000 a month is a bigger cut than 2.7% + 30¢ on the same $2,000. Run your own numbers; at higher volume the answer can flip.
Bundle the file with the room. A template alone is a one-time sale; a template plus Discord access is a reason to stay and a reason to refer. That is the structure here, and it costs nothing extra to set up.
Measure before you sell. Google Analytics 4, Tag Manager and Search Console with a conversion event on the purchase, so that when the next $15,000 arrives you know which post, which video and which link sent it.
Get proof with names. The write-up has one number and no buyers. One canonical page for the product, with named buyers and what they did with the templates, and Dollar-a-Day behind the post that already sold copies on its own.
Who this is not for
Whop is a checkout, financing, affiliate and storefront layer, not an accounting or field-service app, and it will not write the ebook. If you ship physical goods, the Shopify comparison does not hold. The base rate is 2.7% + 30¢, 20 basis points under Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢; the optional layers, managed tax at 2%, orchestration at 0.8% and billing at 0.5%, can push the stack above Stripe. Financing requires $30,000 processed from 10 or more customers in 90 days and a dispute rate under 2%, and is unavailable to gambling, sports betting, trading signals, credit offers and adult categories; this story does not involve financing.
If you were going to use Whop anyway
If you were going to sign up for Whop anyway, sign up through my link, dennisyu.com/go/whop, or send me your business name and email and I will submit the referral. Whop pays me a share of its profit on your account; your rate is the same 2.7% + 30¢ either way. In return my team at Local Service Spotlight sets up the AI agents that audit your public reputation, fix what they find, and keep it maintained: a personal brand analysis, Google Analytics 4, Tag Manager and Search Console with conversion events that actually fire, a Content Factory that turns one recording into a definitive article, clips and posts, and a weekly Metrics, Analysis, Action report. That is the work we normally charge community and membership businesses for.
