The Last Triple Major
Alex Wissner-Gross graduated from MIT in 2003 as the last triple major in the school’s history — Physics, Electrical Science and Engineering, and Mathematics — finishing first of roughly 550 in his School of Engineering class and winning (then declining) a Marshall Scholarship to pursue a Harvard physics PhD as a Hertz Fellow. His 2007 thesis on physically programmable surfaces won the Hertz Doctoral Thesis Prize.
In 2013 he published “Causal Entropic Forces” in Physical Review Letters — a proposal that intelligent behavior emerges from maximizing future freedom of action, compressed into a single equation: F = T∇Sτ. The TED talk explaining it, “A new equation for intelligence,” has been viewed 2.2 million times in 27 languages.
Two decades of research affiliations at Harvard and the MIT Media Lab, a Y Combinator company, 26 patents, and 40+ startup investments later, he now spends his time on one bet: that superintelligence, aimed well, solves everything else.
