Whop for Paid Communities: Eight Membership Stories
Summary. Paid communities are Whop’s home turf: subscription billing, automatic Discord or chat access, a storefront with reviews, and affiliates paid by the platform. GFNF reached $1.3 million in ARR without a developer, FlipFlip earns $10,000 a month from 175 affiliate referrals, Vookum Verified passed $1 million on a $20 membership, and Frozen Freebies automated 1,000-plus members after four failed platforms. Eight stories are retold below.
What you pay to get paid: today versus Whop, on your own numbers
Base rates only: Stripe 2.9% + 30¢, Whop 2.7% + 30¢. Whop’s optional layers (managed tax 2%, orchestration 0.8%, billing 0.5%) are not included and can push the stack above Stripe. Instant payouts, disputes and international cards are extra on both.
Why I am writing about Whop for community and membership
Every community story on Whop is the same story: the founder was doing billing and access by hand, or paying a developer to keep custom code alive, and the platform took that job. GFNF’s founder estimates the manual path would have converted at a fraction of what it converts now; Frozen Freebies tried four dashboards first.
The growth lever that repeats is affiliates. Members who make money in the community recruit the next members, and Whop tracks and pays them. FlipFlip and Resell University both run on it.
8 community and membership stories on Whop, retold from my point of view
Each retelling links to Whop’s original write-up, keeps only the numbers Whop published, and ends with what I would tell a community owner to copy.

- How FlipFlip built a near-$1M reselling community on Whop. Nearly $1M since Nov 2022; $10K a month from affiliates.
- Vookum Verified: over $1 million from a $20 community on Whop. 7,207 lifetime members; over $1 million revenue.
- How Frozen Freebies automated 1,000+ memberships on Whop. 1,000+ paying members; $56M+ checked out by members.
- How Resell University pays outbound staff as Whop affiliates. Seven figures; 30+ affiliates, 200+ referrals, 200+ reviews.
- How Astro Alerts runs a 1,400-member community on Whop. 1,400+ members; EUR 35,000+ a month.
- Elusive Profit: $15,000 in two months on Whop. $15,000 in two months per Whop's headline.
- How Girl Boss Abroad sells a travel community on Whop. Content reaches hundreds of thousands of women; revenue not stated.
What Whop does for a community owner
For a community Whop is subscription tiers with one-click checkout and Apple Pay, automatic Discord roles or built-in chat, a no-code landing page and a marketplace listing with reviews, phone alerts, a dashboard with revenue and churn, and an affiliate program with a 30% default you can change per affiliate. Financing is irrelevant at membership price points; the fees that matter are the base rate and, if you use it, billing automation.
What it costs
Whop’s base rate is 2.7% + 30¢ per card transaction with no monthly fee, 20 basis points under Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢. Optional layers cost extra: managed sales tax 2%, payment orchestration 0.8%, billing automation 0.5%, affiliate payout processing 1.25%. International cards add 1.5% and currency conversion 1%. Disputes are $15. Instant payouts are 4% + $1; next-day ACH is $2.50.
Financing is not on by default. Whop requires a verified Whop Payments account, a complete store page, a dispute rate under 2% over 90 days, and $30,000 processed from ten or more customers in the last 90 days, or 90 days of statements from your previous processor. It is not available to gambling, sports betting, trading signals, credit offers or adult categories.
What I set up for community and membership businesses that sign up through me
If you were going to sign up for Whop anyway, sign up through my link, dennisyu.com/go/whop, or send me your business name and email and I will submit the referral. Whop pays me a share of its profit on your account; your rate is the same 2.7% + 30¢ either way. In return my team at Local Service Spotlight sets up the AI agents that audit your public reputation, fix what they find, and keep it maintained: a personal brand analysis, Google Analytics 4, Tag Manager and Search Console with conversion events that actually fire, a Content Factory that turns one recording into a definitive article, clips and posts, and a weekly Metrics, Analysis, Action report. For a community that means the founder’s personal brand, named member results on one canonical page, and the measurement that separates affiliate members from organic ones. That is the work we normally charge community and membership businesses for, and I am a Whop partner, so Whop pays me from its side of the account, not yours. The full program and my disclosure are on the Whop affiliate program page.
Who this is not for
If your community sells sports betting picks, trading signals or anything in Whop’s excluded categories, financing is unavailable and I do not write about those businesses. If you have twenty members and a free Discord, you do not need a platform yet.
Questions community and membership owners ask
Does Whop connect to Discord? Yes. A paying member is assigned the Discord role automatically and loses it when the subscription lapses; GFNF, Frozen Freebies and Cajun Koi Academy all run that way.
How do community affiliates get paid? Whop tracks the referral link, holds the commission for a 30-day waiting period and pays it; refunds, disputes and fraud forfeit it. FlipFlip attributes $10,000 a month to 175 affiliate referrals.
What does a community pay in fees? 2.7% + 30¢ per transaction, plus 0.5% if you turn on billing automation and 1.25% on affiliate payouts processed through Whop. No monthly fee.
