Summary. LetPhil is Phil Choi’s tech-career mentorship, built nine months after he was laid off, with about 200 paid members on Whop, a 13,000-member free Discord, and more than 40 members placed at companies including Amazon, IDEA, NatWest and American Express, some earning $200,000 or more. If you coach people into jobs, placements are your proof, and this is how one founder organized the delivery.
What LetPhil was doing before Whop
Phil is from California and taught English in Korea for five years before changing careers at 30. The write-up quotes him on the fear of still teaching first graders at 40; that fear was the push.
After he was laid off he needed four things to run a paid mentorship: a way to take payments, a place to host course material, a way to organize resources, and a way to move paying members into his Discord. Nine months after the layoff he launched LetPhil with his own development team.
What changed on Whop
Whop became the back office. In his words: “Whop handles the payments, hosts the courses, keep all the resources organized, and then notify members to come join the Discord.” The free Discord is the top of the funnel; the paid mentorship on Whop is the product; the placement is the outcome.
The accountability runs both ways. He says of the members who trusted him: “I’m not allowed to run away from this.” That is the right posture for a coach whose product is someone else’s career.
The numbers
Whop reports a 13,000-member free Discord, about 200 paid mentorship members, more than 40 members placed at named companies, some earning $200,000 or more, and nine months from layoff to launch. It does not report the mentorship price, revenue, or the placement rate as a share of paid members, so I cannot tell you the odds a new member faces.
What I would tell a career coach to copy
Publish placements with names and companies. Forty people at Amazon, NatWest and American Express is the entire marketing plan if the people are willing to be named. One canonical page, one row per placement, updated as they land. That page will outrank every “how to break into tech” post you could write.
Run the free community as the funnel and measure the step. 13,000 free to 200 paid is a 1.5% conversion. Google Analytics 4 and Tag Manager on the landing page, with the Whop checkout firing as a conversion event, tell you which Discord channel, post or call moved people across.
Ship the delivery before the brand. Phil built the plumbing with his own team, then let Whop carry the routine. A coach doing onboarding by hand at 200 members is not coaching.
Then put a dollar a day behind the placement story that already got comments, and let the winners run for 30 days. The proof is the ad.
Who this is not for
Whop is a checkout, course, community and storefront layer. It is not an applicant-tracking system, a resume tool or a job board. The base rate is 2.7% + 30¢, 20 basis points under Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢, and the optional layers, managed tax at 2%, orchestration at 0.8% and billing at 0.5%, can push the stack above Stripe. Financing requires $30,000 processed from 10 or more customers in 90 days and a dispute rate under 2%, and it is unavailable to gambling, sports betting, trading signals, credit offers and adult categories. A mentorship priced in the low thousands could use financing once the threshold is met; a free Discord with a small paid tier will not.
If you were going to use Whop anyway
If you were going to sign up for Whop anyway, sign up through my link, dennisyu.com/go/whop, or send me your business name and email and I will submit the referral. Whop pays me a share of its profit on your account; your rate is the same 2.7% + 30¢ either way. In return my team at Local Service Spotlight sets up the AI agents that audit your public reputation, fix what they find, and keep it maintained: a personal brand analysis, Google Analytics 4, Tag Manager and Search Console with conversion events that actually fire, a Content Factory that turns one recording into a definitive article, clips and posts, and a weekly Metrics, Analysis, Action report. That is the work we normally charge coaching and consulting businesses for.

This story is retold from Whop’s own write-up, He changed his career at 30: now he’s helping hundreds do the same with Whop (2026-05-21, modified 2026-06-25), which you should read in full. I am a Whop partner and earn a share of Whop’s profit from businesses that sign up through my link. Whop did not pay for or review this article.
