Dennis Loves to Play Golf: The Rounds, the Ranges, and the People

I love to play golf. Not well, but often, and almost never alone. This page is the running record of the rounds, the ranges, the simulators, and mostly the people who play with me. If you are in one of these pictures, thank you for the round.

Why golf

Golf is four hours with someone where nobody is checking a watch. You find out who a person is on the third hole after a bad drive, not in a conference room. Most of the best relationships in my business were built walking a fairway, and now that my agents do the work while I play, there is no reason to feel guilty about it. I check the phone between holes, give the agents a thumbs up or a correction, and go hit the next shot. That is the way life should be: business, health, and friends in the same afternoon. I have written before that golf, like business, is a game of mistake management, and that in marketing, as in golf, you only need one home run.

Early daysScanned prints from when I first picked up a club. The evidence is below.

Where it started

These are scans of prints from my early days with a club. The striped polo, the khaki shorts, and a swing that has not changed as much as I would like to think. Some things do not change.

The Sacramento round I still think about

Years ago in Sacramento I played a round with Jimmie Yee, who had been Mayor of Sacramento in 1999 and 2000 and later a county supervisor, and with Chris Rommel, my co-founder and friend. Chris has since passed away. I do not need the scorecard from that day. I remember who I was with, and that is the whole reason I play. If I find the print, it goes here.

Marko Sipila

Marko started a marketing agency in high school, built it to seven figures, sold it, and now runs HVACQuote.ai and CoatingLaunch for home-service contractors. I wrote the long version at Honoring Marko Sipila. We have played a lot of golf together, from a driver at Topgolf in December 2022 to a real cart on a real course in 2024 and 2025. He is the person I would pick as CMO of any home-services company on the planet, and he hits it straighter than I do, which I hold against him.

The Sphere Rocket Open

Three days in Dallas in September 2026 with Sphere Rocket: Cowboys Golf Club, Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco, a helicopter ball drop, and a group that included Simon Harries of JVZoo, Aden Trano of Whop, and Jack Allard, who runs Roof Launch Marketing in our network. I wrote the whole thank-you note, with a lot more pictures, at dennisyu.com/sphererocket.

The young operators

A lot of my rounds are with the young adults I train to run agencies for plumbers, roofers, and HVAC companies. Golf is where the real lessons get taught: patience, honesty about your score, and what to do after a bad shot. Will Troupp and Landon Bates, this one is for you.

Nobody remembers your score. Everybody remembers who you played with and whether you were fun to be around for four hours.

Rounds, ranges, and rooftops

Everything else: night ranges, a putting green on a rooftop, simulators when it was too hot to be outside, and a few rounds that were mostly an excuse to talk.
