How 12 students earned $16K in 36 hours with Whop checkout links

Summary. Hack Shack is an invite-only builder retreat hosted by Columbia student Amrutha Rao where 12 students from Columbia, Harvard and Princeton built products over one weekend and auctioned them, collecting $16,000 in 36 hours upfront through Whop checkout links, with the largest deal at $12,500 for an iOS game. If you run a hackathon, an incubator or a student program, the scoring rule is the thing to copy.

What Hack Shack was doing before Whop

Rao’s complaint about hackathons is the premise. “Hackathons optimize for impressing judges and technicality over usability. I wanted to create a weekend centered on real results: users and revenue.” The write-up does not say where the retreat was held.

So the scoring rule changed: the goal of the weekend, in her words, was to maximize money in the bank by Sunday at 9am.

What changed on Whop

Money in the bank needs a way to collect it. Each product was auctioned, and the buyer paid upfront through a Whop checkout link, so the number on Sunday morning was cash received, not letters of intent.

Whop’s John Hill states the larger program in three sentences: “Every student builds a whop. Every student learns to build that business in class or through entrepreneurial center support. Every student graduates with a sustainable income.” Hack Shack is the weekend version of that.

The numbers

Whop reports $16,000 earned in 36 hours by 12 students, a largest deal of $12,500 for an iOS game, and an X post about the weekend reaching 2 million views. It reports Whop Higher Ed at more than 100 universities and nearly 4,000 student businesses with a 100,000-student goal for 2026. It does not say how the $16,000 was split, who the buyers were, or what happened to the products afterward. The $30,000-plus average student debt is an article-cited figure.

What I would tell an educator to copy

Score revenue received, not pitches delivered. The moment the metric became cash by Sunday at 9am, the students built things someone would pay for. Any program can adopt that rule this semester.

Collect the payment inside the event. A checkout link takes a minute to make and turns a promise into a receipt. Without it, your $16,000 is a slide.

Publish the receipts with names. Twelve students, twelve products, twelve prices, on one canonical page for the retreat. That page recruits next year’s cohort and the buyers.

Measure the reach that matters. The X post did 2 million views; Google Analytics 4 and Tag Manager on the retreat page, with the application form firing as a conversion event, tell you how many of those views became applicants.

Then put a dollar a day behind the student demo that already got comments.

Who this is not for

Whop is a checkout, storefront, course and community layer. It does not run the auction, judge the products or manage the retreat. The base rate is 2.7% + 30¢, 20 basis points under Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢, and the optional layers, managed tax at 2%, orchestration at 0.8% and billing at 0.5%, can push the stack above Stripe. Financing requires $30,000 processed from 10 or more customers in 90 days and a dispute rate under 2%, and it is unavailable to gambling, sports betting, trading signals, credit offers and adult categories. A one-weekend event will not qualify for financing and does not need the optional layers; the base rate on $16,000 is about $430 plus 30 cents a transaction.

If you were going to use Whop anyway

If you were going to sign up for Whop anyway, sign up through my link, dennisyu.com/go/whop, or send me your business name and email and I will submit the referral. Whop pays me a share of its profit on your account; your rate is the same 2.7% + 30¢ either way. In return my team at Local Service Spotlight sets up the AI agents that audit your public reputation, fix what they find, and keep it maintained: a personal brand analysis, Google Analytics 4, Tag Manager and Search Console with conversion events that actually fire, a Content Factory that turns one recording into a definitive article, clips and posts, and a weekly Metrics, Analysis, Action report. That is the work we normally charge education businesses for.
