Whop for Universities and Student Founders: Build a Whop as Coursework
Summary. Whop’s higher-education program turns “build a business” into an assignment with a checkout: Michigan State’s Burgess Institute has 350 student launches, a University of South Carolina class won a USASBE award with a podcast on Whop, Hack Shack’s 12 students earned $16,000 in 36 hours, and the program spans 100-plus universities and nearly 4,000 student businesses. All four stories are retold below, for educators, program sponsors and the agencies that hire from those rooms.
What you pay to get paid: today versus Whop, on your own numbers
Base rates only: Stripe 2.9% + 30¢, Whop 2.7% + 30¢. Whop’s optional layers (managed tax 2%, orchestration 0.8%, billing 0.5%) are not included and can push the stack above Stripe. Instant payouts, disputes and international cards are extra on both.
Why I am writing about Whop for education
I train young adults to run agencies, so student founders are my hiring pool, and I care how they are taught. The pattern across these stories is that the grade moved from the plan to the receipt: a student who sold one thing to one stranger learned more than one who wrote forty pages.
For a university, the mechanism is a campus page, a storefront per student business, and time-boxed sprints; for a student, it is a checkout link and a first customer. Whop reports the launches and rarely the revenue, and I say so in each retelling.
4 education stories on Whop, retold from my point of view
Each retelling links to Whop’s original write-up, keeps only the numbers Whop published, and ends with what I would tell a educator to copy.
- How Michigan State got 350 students to launch businesses on Whop. 350 MSU students launched businesses; ~4,000 across programs.
- How campus whops gave Kube Marketing's Griffin Kubicki his peers. 100+ universities; ~4,000 student businesses; 100,000-student goal.
- How 12 students earned $16K in 36 hours with Whop checkout links. $16,000 in 36 hours; largest deal $12,500.
- How a USC class won a USASBE award with a podcast on Whop. 64 students, 13-14 clients, USASBE award.
What Whop does for a educator
For an education program Whop is a university page where student businesses live, storefronts and checkout links for each business, courses and events apps for the curriculum, community chat for the cohort, and Whopathons, time-boxed competitions that compress a launch into days. Students pay the base rate on what they sell; the institution owns the curriculum and the gradebook.
What it costs
Whop’s base rate is 2.7% + 30¢ per card transaction with no monthly fee, 20 basis points under Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢. Optional layers cost extra: managed sales tax 2%, payment orchestration 0.8%, billing automation 0.5%, affiliate payout processing 1.25%. International cards add 1.5% and currency conversion 1%. Disputes are $15. Instant payouts are 4% + $1; next-day ACH is $2.50.
Financing is not on by default. Whop requires a verified Whop Payments account, a complete store page, a dispute rate under 2% over 90 days, and $30,000 processed from ten or more customers in the last 90 days, or 90 days of statements from your previous processor. It is not available to gambling, sports betting, trading signals, credit offers or adult categories.
What I set up for education businesses that sign up through me
If you were going to sign up for Whop anyway, sign up through my link, dennisyu.com/go/whop, or send me your business name and email and I will submit the referral. Whop pays me a share of its profit on your account; your rate is the same 2.7% + 30¢ either way. In return my team at Local Service Spotlight sets up the AI agents that audit your public reputation, fix what they find, and keep it maintained: a personal brand analysis, Google Analytics 4, Tag Manager and Search Console with conversion events that actually fire, a Content Factory that turns one recording into a definitive article, clips and posts, and a weekly Metrics, Analysis, Action report. For a program that means named, checkable student results on one canonical page per cohort, and the measurement that tells you which assignment produced revenue. For a student agency, it means the client plumbing that turns a pitch into proof. That is the work we normally charge education businesses for, and I am a Whop partner, so Whop pays me from its side of the account, not yours. The full program and my disclosure are on the Whop affiliate program page.
Who this is not for
If your program cannot let students take real payments, for policy or legal reasons, Whop is a demo, not a curriculum. Student businesses at early volumes will not touch financing, and a university should not expect to.
